Women Impacting Youth Literacy
For more than half a century, Black River United Way has brought together people and resources to tackle complex issues and drive sustainable, positive change.
We partner with local communities to co-create solutions to pressing challenges, taking a comprehensive approach. With this in mind, we are proud to announce the formation of our local chapter of Women United.
WHAT WE DO
Misson
Women United is enabling age-appropriate literacy in Georgetown and Williamsburg county children through the Black River United Way’s Heroes for Literacy program funded via our annual Power of the Purse signature fundraiser & various membership drives.
Vision
Currently, only 56% of Georgetown County and 38.4% of Williamsburg students are reading at grade level by 3rd grade completion.
Our goal is to increase age-appropriate literacy to meet the South Carolina average of 61.7% by 2031.
Goal
We are establishing a solid foundation of community and sustainable giving, achieving our goal through increased awareness and participation in Women United benefiting Heroes for Literacy, with an initial financial goal of $22,000 to support 40-60 students in the 2026 program.
