BUDDIES
Reading Buddies is a skills-based volunteer program. We connect business professionals and community stakeholders to Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students who need extra support in reading.

Black River United Way is proudly working directly with teachers and principals to target the most at-risk students and ensure they have the support they need.
Reading Buddies Program connects business professionals and community stakeholders to Pre-K through 2nd-grade students who need extra support in reading. These children are known as striving readers.

HOW IT WORKS

RECRUIT: Black River United Way will recruit volunteers to read 1 on 1 to Pre-K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Graders who need help building foundational reading capacity

READ: Volunteers review letter names, letter sounds, and sight word drills with Pre-K through 2nd Graders. Reading Buddies will provide 30-minute 1 on 1 or small groups tutoring 1-2 times per week

INSPIRE: Students to focus more on reading strategies and help them reach their reading level or beyond​

Scholastic R.E.A.L.®: Implementation Guide
Black River United Way is proud to offer Scholastic R.E.A.L.® to Georgetown and Williamsburg County elementary schools.
With this program, primary school children will explore fiction and nonfiction books that cover topics reflecting their families, friends, communities, and concerns.
Scholastic R.E.A.L.® is a read-aloud mentoring program designed to inspire students and build literacy skills.

HOW IT WORKS

RECRUIT: Black River United Way will recruit volunteers to mentor 1st Grade Classrooms to support their literacy development.

READ: R.E.A.L. Mentors read aloud in selected classrooms for an hour each month. Each mentor has one class of 1st Grade students.
-
INSPIRE: Mentors read and discuss four books during their class visits. Students will receive their own copies of the book to build their personal libraries.
