AmeriCorps SC

The Misson: Read AmeriCorps program is a high-quality, comprehensive, research-based English literacy tutoring program that supports students, families, and the community.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) administers AmeriCorps at the federal level and works in partnership with states to develop service programs and create a community-based national service network.

Oftentimes described as the domestic Peace Corps, AmeriCorps programs help communities address locally-defined challenges by mobilizing America’s greatest asset, its citizens. There are full- and part-time AmeriCorps positions available across South Carolina that engage dedicated leaders from age 17 to 117+ who will commit to utilizing their skill, experience, and passion to address needs in the community.

Black River United Way is a grantee of the South Carolina AmeriCorps program.  The Misson: Read AmeriCorps Program is a high-quality, comprehensive, research-based English literacy tutoring program that supports students, families, and the community.

The Misson: Read AmeriCorps Program's purpose is to provide struggling readers at local elementary schools with highly trained AmeriCorps tutors and volunteers to ensure that children advance to reading grade level before third grade and close reading gaps.  The program continues to have success in helping students improve in reading literacy by offering small group supplemental instruction, one-on-one tutoring and skills focused tutoring with our members and volunteers in-person and virtually. Many of our AmeriCorps Members not only learn new skills but are able to serve students in a way that benefits the entire community.
